North Texas is now 0-3 in conference play after surrendering a late eight point lead to UAB at The Super Pit on Thursday, Jan. 5.
After early offensive struggles, Ryan Woolridge scored six big points in the latter part of the first half. The Mean Green defense also registered nine steals in the opening 20 minutes, and allowed just 36 percent shooting from the floor to UAB.
North Texas took a 27-23 lead heading into halftime.
The Mean Green continued their solid defensive effort through most of the second half building up a 50-42 lead with fewer than five left in regulation. However, four minutes of bad offense turned an eight point lead to a 51-50 deficit after a UAB put back with 44.7 seconds left to play.
J-Mychal Reese hit a clutch free-throw-line jumper, giving North Texas the 52-51 lead with 19 seconds to play. With 5.9 seconds left, UAB’s William Lee drove the lane and converted the three-point play after being fouled on the dunk. That would prove to be the game winner as Ryan Woolridge’s 12-foot baseline jump shot rimmed out at the buzzer.
The Mean Green look to snap their four game losing streak as they welcome Middle Tennessee State to The Super Pit on Saturday, Jan. 7. at 2:00pm.
