FM 88.1 HD2 is KNTU Jazz

KNTU is licensed to the University of North Texas and is on the air 24 hours, every day of the year, broadcasting two radio station at 88.1 FM — 88.1 HD1 is alternative rock (88.1 indie) and 88.1 HD2 is jazz.

The station went on the air officially on Oct. 31, 1969, with only 440 watts at 88.5 FM. But during subsequent years, the station increased its power and moved to 88.1 FM.

The KNTU.com and FM 88.1 HD2 has a jazz format with Monday through Friday hourly newscasts from NBC Radio (newscasts air from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on the weekend) and a special syndicated weekend program called Musical Starstreams (an exotic electronica show Sunday at 10:00 a.m. and repeated the following Saturday at midnight).

KNTU’s purpose is to serve the public interest with news and entertainment programming for the McKinney, Denton, Dallas-Fort Worth area; to provide news and information of community interest about the University of North Texas; and to provide an industry-standards environment in which students learn about radio broadcasting. Our staff is made up of UNT students from different areas (majors) since the station offers an excellent opportunity to gain valuable broadcast experience in a various ways including programming and production, news and sports announcing, sales and development, and station administration.

All UNT students are eligible to work at KNTU as volunteers or part of our 8-person middle management team. The studios are in the Media Arts Department inside the Radio/TV/Film & Performing Arts (RTFP) Building on the University of North Texas campus in Denton.
