Guyer High School advances to 2009 state football championship semifinals.

DENTON, TX (KNTU)  The Denton Guyer Wildcats advanced to the Class 4A state high school football semifinals for the second consecutive year after the team squeaked by its crosstown rival Denton Ryan Raiders on Saturday at the C.H. Collins Athletic Complex in Denton.

Raiders quarterback Scotty Young threw his fifth interception of the contest in the dying minutes of the game to seal Guyer's win. Young had eight interceptions in his prior 13 games.

Guyer took a 28-13 lead in the fourth quarter when Jihmaine Wilhite, who racked up 240 yards on 29 carries in the game, ran 22 yards for a touchdown. Guyer quarterback J.W. Walsh also had a strong game on the ground as he picked up 115 yards; he threw for just 72 yards and two interceptions.

Ryan's Young threw for 304 yards on the day, but lost costly interceptions in the red zone to hamper the Red Raider's chances of closing the scoring gap. He also threw an interception to Josh Stewart that was returned 64 yards for a score in the second quarter.

Overall, Guyer rushed for 348 yards compared to Ryan's 20.

The Wildcats will go up against Longview in the state semifinal match-up, a rematch of last year's semifinals in which Longview ended the Guyer Wildcat season. The location, date and time of the game has not yet been announced. However, according to the broadcast of the Longview-Waxahachie game, the game will either be played at Southern Methodist University in Dallas or in Shreveport, Louisiana.
