KNTU is an extra-curricular activity open to all students at the University of North Texas. While some students do receive practicum credit for their work at KNTU, volunteer / practicum positions at KNTU are NOT labs connected with any course. In other words, no student will be placed in a KNTU position simply because they have registered for a particular course.
Rather, all students who apply for a volunteer / practicum position will be required to audition for that position, and, in some cases, take a test to demonstrate their knowledge of basic background information necessary to perform tasks in certain departments (i.e., knowledge of current events for the news department).
KNTU is a very visible representative of the University of North Texas. While continuing to provide an industry standard learning environment for students who are starting out in broadcasting, KNTU's mission also includes providing listeners throughout Dallas/Fort Worth with the highest level of programming possible from a professionally run student radio station. This is similar to other highly visible UNT activities, such as the lab bands and inter-collegiate sports, in that students who participate in those activities must try out and demonstrate their ability to perform at an acceptable level.
